RESEARCH __________________________________________________________________

My works are centered on the formation and evolution of galaxies and the detection, identification and study of galaxies in the early universe using a multi-wavelength approach (Spectral Energy Distribution, SED) via observation and modeling.

To understand galaxies, I have developed with a team to seven people, a code that models the emission of galaxies from the ultraviolet to the far-infrared: CIGALE (Code Investigating GALaxy Emission, http://cigale.lam.fr). CIGALE is parallelized in Python 3 and is designed to fit large samples of several 104 observed SEDs by comparing the observed data to several 108 models.

My works led to 161 refereed papers, 8700 refereed citations, with an h-index = 52.

A) Research:

My research focuses on the formation and evolution of galaxies and the search for the first galaxies by a) a multi-λ observational approach and the development of appropriate instruments, and b) a theoretical approach: stellar population synthesis based on a global energy budget ultraviolet + infrared (UV + IR), modeling and adjustment of spectral energy distributions (SEDs).

The history of star formation in the universe. Lyman discontinuity galaxies (LBGs) are selected in redshift domains fixed by the filters used (p.e. U-V vs. V-z at z ~ 3). These LBGs are "starbursts", active in stellar formation (a few 10 to 100 MSun / year). They form the main sources at z> 3 making it possible to estimate the density of stellar formation (ρ in MSun / year / Mpc3) up to z > 10 (I am co-responsible of the SED fitting for the accepted JWST-ERS program). But this only provides an estimate in UV (ρUV), directly received from the stars. The contribution from the energy of the UV photons recycled by dust is dominant up to z ~ 3 - 4 (ie ρIR (z)> ρIR (z = 0) ~ 50%). From IR Herschel observations, I have shown for the first time (Burgarella et al., 2013) that this trend reverses at z ~ 4 and that ρIR / ρUV decreases and falls below the level at z = 0.

To estimate ρTOT = ρUV + ρIR, it is necessary to measure ρIR. But that is difficult (terrestrial atmosphere, parasitic emissions ...). It is possible to use the UV slope, which is correlated with the attenuation of galaxies by dust. This "β-method" with f (λ) = λβ is often applied, even if its validity is debated. I realized (with one of my PhD students) the stacking sources on the basis of ''priors '', in UV). For the first time, we obtained convincing results and detections using a rigorous statistical approach (bias correction). The validation or not of the "β method", the search for an alternative based on stacking and the direct measurement of the IR emission of galaxies are at the first focus of my research. The objective is the measurement of the evolution of cosmic star formation density, ρ (z). I used the satellites Spitzer, Akari and Herschel. To go further, I will use mm telescopes on the ground: IRAM/NOEMA and ALMA.

Finally, still with the same objective, I started a collaboration with members of the SVOM team (Franco-Chinese space project) and Hungarian colleagues, to observe in mm and model with CIGALE, host galaxies of Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) at very high redshift.

The CIGALE project is the second focus of my research. CIGALE is a code that, starting from a synthesis of stellar populations, creates for each "run", a library of 105-108 models of spectra from UV to sub-mm, based on hypotheses on the history of stellar formation, dust attenuation laws (different for young and old stars) via an energy balance. The models are compared with SEDs observed via a statistical analysis. CIGALE is one of the two major codes worldwide and is widely used in Herschel extragalactic projects.

B) Teaching:

I coordinate a Massive Online Open Course (MOOC) on Astrophysics. This MOOC was opened twice since 2015. Because of COVID-19, we have delayed the update of the MOOC and the archived version (Vers. 2) is played during locked in 2020.

·       https://www.fun-mooc.fr/courses/amu/38001/session01/about; a first one on Spring 2015 was followed by 5607 persons.

·       https://www.fun-mooc.fr/courses/course-v1:amu+38001+session02/about; a second one at the beginning of 2018 was followed by more than 6000 persons.

·       I also teach in the second year of the Master course in Aix-Marseille University. This teaching is a project where student will use a Python code to model some astrophysical phenomenon (e.g., the time evolution of a globular cluster, the time evolution of a planetary system) in 3D. The main astrophysical objective is to teach them stars and stellar evolution. On the numerical side, they need to develop skills to write Python codes in 3D to simulate these phenomena.

·       Finally, I am strongly involved in outreach: I give several public conferences per year and I also collaborate with school teachers to present Astrophysics at all levels.
